We build what the family invents

Teuchein Corporation is the manufacturing company of the Retherford family of companies. It takes an invention from a working prototype to a pilot run to a finished product.

Talk to us about a build

τεύχειν

Teuchein, said “TOO-kine”

To make, to build, to forge

The name is an ancient Greek verb for producing something by skilled work. Homer uses it in the Iliad when Hephaestus makes the shield of Achilles at his forge.

We chose it because it describes the job. An idea is worth more once someone has made it, tested it, and shown that it can be made again.

  • τεύχεινteuchein: to make, to build, to forge
  • τεῦχοςteuchos: a tool or implement; in the plural, arms and armor
  • τυκτόςtyktos: well-wrought, made with skill

Three stages, one road

Every build climbs the same route. Each stage has to hold before the next one starts. Choose a stage to see what happens in it.

Prototype: find out whether the idea works

We build working samples and proof-of-concept units to learn whether an invention does what the drawing says it does.

What we do

  • Build bench samples and test units
  • Make the fixtures needed to test them
  • Record every design change as it happens

What comes out

  • Working units
  • Test results
  • A first bill of materials

Before the next stage

The unit does what it claims more than once, and we know exactly what it is made of.

Pilot: prove the process, and not only the part

We run small lots with the materials and methods intended for production, and we measure what happens.

What we do

  • Run small lots under production conditions
  • Measure yield, cycle time and scrap
  • Set the inspection points

What comes out

  • A routing with measured times
  • A first standard cost
  • A quality plan

Before the next stage

The lot meets its specification at a yield and a cost that justify making more.

Produce: make it the same way every time

We manufacture the products the family chooses to make itself, with the process and the costs already known.

What we do

  • Schedule and run production
  • Inspect incoming material and work in process
  • Keep lot records

What comes out

  • Finished product
  • Traceable lots
  • Monthly cost and variance reports

Every month after

Actual results are held against standard, and any gap is explained and acted on.

How we work

Make it twice

One good unit proves little. We count an idea as proven when it can be made again and come out the same.

Measure before scaling

Yield, time and scrap are measured on a small lot, where a mistake is cheap to find and fix.

Know the cost before the price

Each product has a standard cost before anyone quotes it, so a price is a decision and not a guess.

Write it down

Bills of materials, routings and changes are recorded as the work happens, so the next run starts from facts.

Costed from the first unit

Teuchein is run by people who have spent three decades in plant controllership. The books are part of the build, so each product has a known cost before it has a price.

Standard costs
Material, labor and overhead standards are set for each item and compared with actual results.
Bills and routings
Every product has a bill of materials and a routing before its first run.
Inventory control
Stock is counted, valued and reconciled to the ledger.
Monthly close
The books close every month, and variances are explained, from day one.

Why the pilot matters to cost

Move the sliders to see how a standard cost is built, and what yield does to it. The figures are examples only, not Teuchein prices.

License it or build it

Most of the family’s inventions are licensed to companies that already make similar products. Some are better built in-house. These are the questions that decide it.

License

Handled by Blastanein Corporation

  • An established manufacturer already has the equipment and the customers.
  • The invention is a component of someone else’s product.
  • Reaching volume would take more capital than the product justifies.

Build

Handled by Teuchein Corporation

  • The way it is made is part of what makes it work.
  • A working product is needed to prove the market before a licensee will commit.
  • The family wants direct control of quality and supply.

Where Teuchein sits

Teuchein is one of three operating companies owned by HeOntotita Corporation, the family’s holding company. Drofrehter Corporation, the family office, oversees the group.

For the family’s inventors

Teuchein turns a filed idea into something that can be held, tested and shown.

For licensees

Sample units and pilot data give a prospective licensee evidence that a technology can be made.

For suppliers

We buy materials, tooling and outside processing, and we give suppliers clear specifications and schedules.

Questions

What does Teuchein make?

Prototypes, pilot lots and finished products based on inventions the Retherford family owns. What we make at any time depends on which inventions the family has chosen to build.

Who owns Teuchein?

HeOntotita Corporation, the family’s holding company, owns Teuchein. Drofrehter Corporation, the family office, oversees the group.

How is Teuchein different from Blastanein?

Blastanein holds the family’s intellectual property and licenses it. Teuchein makes physical things. An invention can go through either company, or through both.

Is every invention built by Teuchein?

No. Most are licensed to manufacturers who already serve the market. Teuchein builds when the family decides to make the product itself, or when a prototype or pilot is needed first.

Does Teuchein build for other companies?

The family’s own inventions come first. If you have a build in mind, write to us and we will tell you whether it fits.

How do you say the name?

“TOO-kine.” The teuch is the same one found in the word Pentateuch.

Three things help us answer quickly.

  1. What you need made
  2. How far along it is: an idea, a drawing or a working sample
  3. How many you need, and by when
